Mey İçki was established in 2004 through the privatization of Tekel's alcoholic beverage division. Since 2011, it has been a part of Diageo, a global alcoholic beverage producer operating in around 180 countries with regional offices in 80 countries. The company adopted the name "Mey|Diageo" at that time. In Turkey, Mey İçki operates as two distinct entities: one focused on production and the other on sales and marketing.
